The majority of internet service providers in North Cyprus claim that they supply the fastest internet connections, but which is the "fastest" provider ?

We for example, supply dedicated, symmetrical (100Mbps x 100Mbps) internet connections to both businesses and private residences. Internet connections that we deliver using the most modern outdoor wireless networking equipment. Yet we choose to describe our internet connections as consistently reliable and backed by our reputation for providing excellent customer service for 20 years.

Accurately measuring the rate at which internet bandwidth can be downloaded, or uploaded on an internet connection, is a relatively simple thing to do, but relying solely upon speed test results to compare the connection speeds between different service providers may not produce an accurate result in deciding which provider supplies the fastest internet connection in north cyprus.

Many people are obsessed with running internet speed tests and there are various 'online' speed checking services that can be used to do this. Many users see them as a measure of the 'quality' of their internet connection and when carried out repeatedly, they can be useful in establishing a trend over a given period, or by highlighting an 'obvious' problem in 'connectivity'. "Speed" and "Quality" however, shouldn't be conflated because they are not one in the same.

The majority of online speed tests measure the maximum amount of download and upload bandwith that is available at a particular point in time and only for a brief period which is usually 30 seconds (they are a snapshot). They may also return a ping test which is a measure of latency, but the majority don't measure jitter (variability in latency), or packet loss and neither do they measure bandwidth throughput sustainability, or whether bandwidth maximum throughput restrictions are in place. All the aforementioned are important metrics in assessing the quality of an internet connection.

Some users rely upon speed tests to indicate how 'fast' their internet connection is and others, to indicate how slow it is, usually, neither take 'proximity' into account. For example, testing 'speed' between two devices on the same network in close proxmity (distance) to each other will produce a different result to testing speed between devices separated by countries, for example (over a greater distance). Testing to a nearby device can give an overly optimistic view of speed and latency. Many 'sponsored' test services for example, measure the speed 'on' an ISP's network and not to the internet. Additionally, many ISP's configure (optimize) their systems to prioritise speed tests on their network, thereby skewing results in 'their' favour.

For a comprehensive assessment of quality, additional metrics are also relevant, metrics that include network congestion, wired versus wireless connectivity and whether, or not other processes and applications were running at the same time that the speed tests were completed.

So, can internet service providers in North Cyprus be compared using online speed test results alone ? The simple answer is no, they cannot. Using existing customer recommendations to judge which is the best internet provider in North Cyprus is probably a lot easier than searching for the fastest.
